Clay Modelling in Dharga Town, Aluthgama

A group of children, their ages ranging from 9-15 years engaged in clay modelling yesterday as a part of a Psychosocial assistance programme after the recent racial/religious clashes. The models the children came up with spoke volumes about the effect the clashes have had on them and their families. The stories that accompanied the models were filled with narratives of fear, despair on one hand, and resilience and strength on the other. It was almost as if the cracks in the clay absorbed the fears and the tension in the children, and the mere act of rolling the clay, squishing the clay, and pounding the clay was found to be very therapeutic.

The following are some pictures of the clay models.

When words fail, art and creative modes of expression plays an important part in building narratives around a particular theme that is potentially distressing and traumatic.
